| Rio nell’Elba is a small medieval village in an elevated position at almost 180 metres above sea level on the slopes of Monte Capannello. Steeped in history, it is thought to be the first town to have been inhabited on Elba and finds in the S.Giuseppe Grotto testify that mineral veins were mined here as early as the Neolithic period. The remains of Volterraio Castle, built in the year 1000 a little above the town, afford wonderful views over the bay of Portoferraio, particularly popular at sunset. The town has retained its medieval character with its narrow alleyways and petit piazzas.
