| Elba’s capital is located on a rocky promontory. According to legend that Argonauts, led by Jason, came to Portoferraio in search of the Golden Fleece. Archaeological evidence shows an early presence of both Etruscans and Romans. The oldest part of Portoferraio looks on to the Medicean harbour below the impressive Renaissance fortifications which wind their way around the high rocky spur. The town is a treasure trove for history lovers. Its chequered past includes the presence of Emperor Napoleon who built his residence and headquarters just outside the town. Portoferraio is not only full of fascinating facts, it’s also a place to just relax.
