| Elba is the pearl of the Tuscan Archipelago, a cluster of seven islands off Italy's Tuscan coast. Elba, with a population of about 30,000, is Italy's third largest island after Sicily and Sardinia and lies about 20 kilometres off the mainland and the port of Piombino from where the ferries leave for Portoferraio, the capital of Elba. This is the main link between the Tuscan mainland and the island, apart from other possibilities including by air. Elba is an island of contrasts; some areas sun-scorched dry, others a lush green, parts of its 147 kilometre coastline with sandy or pebble beaches, others with rocky coastal cliffs. The surrounding sea, attractive natural landscapes interspersed with small fascinating fortress towns, archaeological treasures and idyllic chestnut groves draw visitors from far and wide.
